I don’t usually piggyback on someone else’s blog, but I feel that Edwin is touching on such an important topic in today’s society that I have to help support what he is saying. You can also partner this entry with the blog previous to it about heroes and role models, because isn’t that what parents should try to be?
Have you ever sat back and listened to people talk about how they feel the future will be like? How many people seem to think that society will crumble, that the free world will turn into a militaristic suppression of everything that we value. They see that each generation seems to be falling more and more into a hole where their lives depend on technology; they are unmotivated or too uneducated to make a difference. They see the children of today as lazy, overweight needy beings that don’t have the ability to grow our culture into something better. Have you met these people? Are you one of them?
Why can’t the future be changed now? Why can’t the children of today grow up to build a world that we would be proud of? I can promise you that television won’t be the one to teach them the power that is in their minds. I can promise that school will never properly teach them how to be prepared to enter adulthood effectively enough to make that change. It comes down to the parents every time!
Edwin said it right when she talked about how parenthood is like an artist molding and shaping another person’s character. But there has to be the motivation to do it! A parent has to want to see their child succeed. A parent makes the largest impression on any child’s life. There are no days off; children are always looking to their parents to understand how the world works. That is why when they see their parents do nothing besides watch TV; they become zombies to mass media. That is why when they see their parents fight; they become confrontational to those around them. That is why when they see their parents put others down; they see it as the right to abuse those around them. And that is why when they see their parents get a divorce, they think that they can just quit on anything in their life. After all, if their parents aren’t going to put the effort in to provide a good home life, why should anyone?
The Fifth Commandment says to “honor thy father and mother,” and so often parents use this as a weapon against their children. They believe that it is up to their kids to respect them, yet they forget the responsibility and importance of raising a young mind. How can children learn to honor their parents if the parents don’t honor themselves or each other?
The generations to come do have the power to make a difference. They have more ability than any generation that has come before them. They have tools to reach millions just at their fingertips. They have the creativity to see a problem and find their own solution to it. They have the innocence to share love with the world that is so desperately in need of it. I will not fail in my own journey as a parent…I can’t! My children will be prepared to do better than I have. I hope they make me wish that I would have made the same impact with my own life. I will take the not be lazy in understanding my children’s needs, and the power that they hold to make a difference. After all, if you don’t believe their generation has the ability to make the world a better place, than you are saying ours does. And if you still disagree with that statement, it means you’ve already quit.
